Reader’s Question:

What happens if I cancel the last three months of my required period to carry SR22 insurance? I live in Texas

Jack

Thank you for asking Jack.

The Texas statute TRC CH. 601.340 a Safety Responsibility Law or Evidence of Financial Responsibility Law, provides information for those whose driver license or privilege has been suspended or revoked.

For you to be able to restore your driving privileges, individuals are mandated to file and maintain an insurance in the form of an SR-22 or financial responsibility certificate , original pink copy, with the Department. SR-22 insurance is required for a period of two (2) years from date of conviction.

There is also a required reinstatement fee with the SR-22. Within the two-year period, if the DMV receives notice from the insurance provider that insurance coverage has been canceled or terminated, suspension action will be taken.

Goodluck!

Teen Driver Insurance In Texas

Reader’s Question:

I just want to know how much a car insurance will go up when I add a teenager on my policy. Are there any deals on teen driver insurance in Texas?

Giselle

Thank you for asking Giselle.

Because of the fact that teenagers that are newly licensed have such high rates of accidents they cost more to insure than an experienced driver who is more prone to avoid an accident than cause it.

In Texas, the costs of adding a teenager will depend upon your insurance rates already, your location and your teen etc. For example if you live in a congested area where your child is more likely to be involved in an accident compare to a more suburban or rural area the rate to insure your teenager will likely be higher.

Generally, adding a teenager may cost $1200 to even $2500 a year. On average, a 16 year old can expect to pay 2.52 times the base rate for their car insurance policy. If you as a parent wanting to add a teen to your policy and is currently now paying $500 for a year of car insurance, then adding a 16 year old newly licensed driver onto your policy could raise your rates to (again on average) $1260 for a year of car insurance.

It depends on where you live according to some studies show that your insurance rates may go up 50 to 200 percent for adding on a teenager.

Texas Teen Auto Insurance With Learners Permit

Reader’s Question:

Can I have my own insurance in TX if I only have a learner’s permit and Im only 15 years old?

Nicole

Thank you for asking Nicole

Young drivers in Texas must comply with the state’s financial responsibility laws, just as older mtorists do. Most young drivers, have the option of satisfying their legal requirements by being added to their parents’ car insurance policy.

It is very expensive to add a young driver to an insurance policy, but it’s cheaper than taking out a separate auto policy. If you want to be insured by your parent’s insurance compnay then they must discuss adding you to insurance policy with their auto insurance agent.

If however you want your own insurance policy it may be possible with just a permit but some insurance carrier will require a fully licensed driver to be on the insurance policy with you. In addition to that, a 15 year old minor you will need a parent or guardian to sign the insurance documents/contract with you.

Most companies would want you to be able to upgrade your learner’s permit first by acquiring a full license within a short period of time after the start of your insurance policy as well if you are trying to take out the policy on your own.

Goodluck!

Texas Non Owner Auto Insurance Policy

Reader’s Question:

My auto insurance carrier will not cover my son on the policy. Can I get a non owners car insurance in Texas instead?

Bill

Thank you for asking Bill.

It doesn’t look like a non-owners policy would be of much help to your son. A non-owners insurance policy would only cover any liability that is incurred by the insured. If a driver is excluded on a policy then he should not operate any motor vehicle in the household, even with a Texas non owners auto insurance policy.

According to the Texas Department of Insurance, you can sometimes remove a teen-aged driver or adult child living at home from your insurance policy by acquiring a non-owner policy, however this is not a good idea. A Texas non-owner car insurance policy only provides additional liability insurance when operating a non-owned vehicle.

It is also noted that if your child got involved in an accident while driving your car, neither your policy nor the non-owner policy will pay for the damages. This is because the child is excluded from your insurance policy and his non-owners is only for providing additional (excess) liability, if the primary insurance is not paying on the damages caused by the accident then the non-owners would not typically pay either.

I would suggest that you find a company that will cover the 21 year old on the policy with you and at the same time provide cheap insurance policy for you. You may start shopping for cheap insurance policy in the net by checking individual websites that will provide a policy including your son.

Goodluck!

Does My Car Finance Company Get Paid If Car Is Totaled

Reader’s Question:

I purchased new car and I put a collision coverage on it. I am financing part of the car’s purchase price through a finance company. My question is why does the finance company get paid the full amount of the value of the vehicle if it gets into a collision? I mean if they get the full amount of the vehicle, I will get nothing meaning whatever I paid for the vehicle will be lost and Ill be empty handed? I live in Galveston, TX.

John

Galveston, TX

Your finance company holds the title to your car until your loan is paid or satisfied. If your car is totaled, the check will most likely be issued both on your names. Whatever amount is left after your loan is paid would go to you. Your insurance carrier in Galveston, TX will determine the value of your car at the time of a loss and pay that amount to the finance company and to you. Most of the time, as soon as you leave the dealership the value of your car depreciates. So you may be upside down as soon as you leave the dealership lot if you were to get into an crash. You can buy GAP insurance in order to protect yourself from that type of loss. This will cover the difference of what you paid for the car and what the actually value is.

Reader’s Question:

My mother passed away and I would like to know how long do I have to change the car insurance under my name in Harris county, Texas.

Ben

Houston Harris county TX

Sorry for the loss of your mother. Since terms of auto insurance policies vary you will need to check from your mother’s insurance company in Harris county Texas how long you have to change over the car insurance policy and what steps to take to have the auto insurance policy for at least your car under your name.

Normally a car insurance policy cancels upon the death of the policyholder, usually by the request of the estate.

It is important in your case to read over the insurance policy issued to your mother. If you need more information, you may contact your mother’s insurance agent or company for verifications and information on what the process is now that your mother has passed away.

Can I Insure a Car I Do Not Own?

Reader’s Question:

Is it considered car insurance fraud if someone adds a car to their car insurance policy that is registered to 2 other non-related individual in the state of Texas?

Phil

Dallas, TX

If somebody adds a car to their car insurance policy without being forthcoming about the real reason that the vehicle is being added to the car insurance policy or whom the registered owners are, it can likely permit the insurance carrier to not cover the vehicle for claims.

If you or anyone you know wants to insure a car that they do not own, and thus have no insurable interest in, they should explain that to their insurance company when trying to add the car to the insurance policy. If you are not sure if you are able to insure a car, you may ask the insurance carrier and find out instead of doing something possibly illegal. Being upfront and honest will allow you to obtain an accurate insurance quote and to be properly covered.
